Computers for Youth Fall 2006 Newsletter (The html version of this newsletter is at http://www.cfy.org/newsletter/1006.htm) ---------- CFY Marks 10,000 Milestone! This year, CFY will serve our 10,000th student since our launch in 1999. CFY has become the national leader in improving the home learning environment of low-income families. Our all-inclusive program supports parents as learning partners, connects classroom learning with the home, and creates educational opportunities for the entire family. CFY's efforts are made possible through the generosity of people like you, our supporters, who share the CFY vision that all children have the quality home learning environment they so richly deserve - and require to succeed in the 21st century. Thank you for your support. ---------- National Growth CFY continues to make significant progress on our national expansion. In Philadelphia, the search is on for an Executive Director of CFY-Philadelphia, a new and highly entrepreneurial position. S/he will be responsible for leveraging CFY's successful June 2006 Philadelphia launch, with a goal of serving 2,000 families per year by FY09-10. This spring, we will launch our program in city #3. GET INVOLVED: Do you know an extraordinary individual in Philadelphia who would be interested in joining the CFY team? Contact Janice Goldfarb at jgoldfarb@cfy.org. ---------- CFY on TV CFY appeared on the nationally syndicated television program, Business Week Weekend. The program featured CFY student, Trinette, speaking at her home about how the CFY learning software helped her and her younger brother do better in school. The program also featured Trinette's mother, Donna, and CFY's President, Elisabeth Stock. ---------- Donor Appreciation CFY regularly accepts donations of 50 or more computers from organizations and corporations who share our vision. Over the course of the last two years, CIBC donated over 1,500 computers - which constitutes a whopping 50% of our total computer in-take during that period! We are grateful for CIBC's generosity. CIBC is a leading North American financial institution. CIBC's corporate philanthropy supports youth, education and health. Would your company or organization be interested in donating computers to CFY? Contact Louis Edwards at ledwards@cfy.org. Daynan has worked as a nonprofit development professional in New York and as a fund-raising consulting in Washington, DC., where he helped run a capital campaign for the Catholic church that eventually raised over $185 million. ---------- Spotlight: CFY Master Teacher, Mark Garcia CFY is lucky to have Mark Garcia as one of our Master Teachers for CFY's Family Learning Workshops. Each Saturday, Mark spends the entire day teaching families how to effectively use their CFY home learning center. Mark's classroom is always filled with wonderment and laughter. "Families love using the educational software together--especially Math Blaster," he said. What makes CFY's training unique is its focus on software that improves academic skills like reading, writing and arithmetic. By insisting parents or guardians attend, CFY supports parents in their role as powerful contributors to their children's education. As Mark explains, "Together families learn how to use their home learning centers and parents receive specific strategies for engaging in learning activities with their kids - it's going to make a difference in the classroom." CFY thanks Mark and countless others for their commitment to CFY's mission of improving the home learning environment of low-income families. ----------- You have received this newsletter, either at your request or at the suggestion of a friend, to inform you of the activites of Computers for Youth, a non-profit organization that provides home computers to low-income students.
